RUSSIAN-ASIAN WORKSHOP ON RESEARCH COLLABORATIONS
2012-10-19

Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (SkolTech)

A Russian-Asian workshop will be held on November 7-9 on the campus of the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST). The main goal of the workshop is to foster Russian-Asian research collaborations that will lead towards participation in the SkolTech 2nd Call for Proposals (white papers due November 30th)  to create a series of major international research centers (CREIs) that address key challenges inscience, technology and innovation. A detailed description of the Call for Proposals, the research areas of interest, and the proposal process is available athttp://www.skolkovotech.ru/research/call-proposals.

The Russian-Asian workshop is anticipated to involve up to 70 participants (potential PIs in future white papers) with 30-40 Asian participants and 20-30 Russians participants. The workshop will include welcome addresses from Prof Tony Chan (HKUST President) and Prof Edward Seidel (SkolTech Senior VP for Research & Innovation), presentations from SkolTech representatives, and breakout sessions for researchers to actively discuss potential collaborations in information technology/computational science, biomedical engineering, energy sciences, nuclear science, and space science. (see http://skolkovotech.ru/sites/default/files/research%20strategy_4_OCT_2012.pdf for
a full description of strategic research areas for SkolTech)

For additional information on the workshop, please contact Kirill Maerle (maerle@skolkovotech.ru) providing the following information - Contact information including position, affiliation, email, etc.
- A short summary of areas of research interests
- A list of potential Russian collaborators with contact information,
e.g. 1 to 3 names

Skolkovo Tech may provide travel and accommodation support for identified Russian participants. In cases where potential contacts in Russia are not already known, Skolkovo Tech will help in identifying suitable collaborators.

More information on Second Call for Proposals (CREI-2) SkolTech, established in 2011 in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is a new private graduate university located just outside of Moscow, Russia.  SkolTech will advance education, scholarship and economic development in the Russian Federation and beyond by educating leading graduate students and conducting research programs that address key challenges in science,
technology and innovation.

Through this Second Call for Proposals (see link below), SkolTech anticipates funding about half a dozen research Centers for Research, Education and Innovation (CREI), of up to US$60 million each, over 5 years. This program will fund collaborative, interdisciplinary and international research teams using innovative approaches in science and technology with high potential impact. Through collaborations between one or more foreign partners, one or more Russian partners, and SkolTech, the CREIs also aim to establish connections between the Russian and international scientific landscapes, and in particular to help attract key researchers and develop core components of SkolTech as
the new institute is built.

Particular emphasis is placed in the fields of Biomedical Science and Technology, Energy Science and Technology, Information Science and Technology, Nuclear Science and Technology, and Space Science and Technology. See the link below for the research investment strategy of SkolTech, including specific areas of interest. In addition to CREIs that will drive research and innovation in these areas, proposals for cross-cutting centers focused on advanced
materials, computational and data-intensive science and engineering, and human engineering and cognition, that help support and develop research in all areas, are also sought. SkolTech is also developing a Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI) that will support the CREIs with a research agenda that will include complex system design as well as manufacturing and logistics, and will support Russian industry.

Activities in composite materials, oil and gas, and electrical power grids are particularly of interest as they can provide basic research needs to advance important Russian industrial sectors. Concept papers of up to five pages describing the research plans are due November 30, 2012. Based on a review of these concept papers, a smaller number of full proposals will be invited by March 29, 2013. A webinar describing the proposal process will be held on Oct 25. A more detailed description of the Call for Proposals, the research areas of interest, the proposal process, and instructions for the webinar are available at: http://www.skolkovotech.ru/research/call-proposals
